UV-RADIATION: Dark Blue Protects Better Than Yellow
October 27th 2009 -
Dark blue and red clothing protects the skin better against the harmful UV rays of the sun as yellow clothes. Spanish scientists have discovered through tests with different colored cotton cloths. The study by the Universidad Politecnica de Catalunya (Terrassa) will appear in the November issue of the magazine “Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research”. That gives the American Chemical Society announced in a press release.

The color of clothing is one of the main factors that determine how well a fabric can block UV rays. “But there are gaps in understanding in detail how colors interact with other factors and thus affect the ability of the tissue to stop UV rays,” said Ascension Riva, Fellow of the current study.
She and her colleagues had dyed cotton fabrics in a variety of red, blue and yellow hues. Subsequently, measurements should indicate how well each different UV light absorbed. The result: Dark blue shading blocks the rays from the best, yellow on the other hand, were by most. The new findings could help designers to create garments with effective UV protection, Riva and her colleagues hope.
