Mouth Cancer: Green Tea is Supposed To Prevent

Green tea extracts may be able to prevent the emergence of floor of mouth cancer. In a small U.S. study, said about half of the surveyed high-risk patients for this type of cancer in the plant extract. Researchers from the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas for the first time were able to demonstrate a dose-dependent, the preventive effect of the substance. “Although not yet definitively proven that green tea is an effective preventive agent, these results encourage further studies,” said Vassiliki Papadimitrakopoulou, co-author of the study. Especially attractive is that the green tea extracts are not toxic and thus largely free of side effects, says cancer specialist.
Between August 2002 and March 2008, the researchers have recruited 41 patients for their study. They all suffer from a so-called leukoplakia of the oral cavity. This whitish coatings caused by chronic irritation of the mucous membrane, for example by excessive cigarette or alcohol consumption. From leukoplakias occur with high probability of malignant tumors.
Study participants should take three months three times a day pills. Three groups were given green tea extract – in low, medium or high doses – a fourth group swallowed a dummy placebo. At the beginning and end of the study phase, the scientists took a sample of tissue from the mouth of the participants. The higher the plant extract was dosed, the more change in the mucosa in the three months to the positive. The green tea affected the metabolism in tissues. Thus, for example, less sprouting new blood vessels, suggesting that the risk declines for cancer.
