Thin-skinned: Why Women Freeze Faster

This is not a cliche, but a fact: men, it is often still very warm, while women start to shiver. But where this gender difference is the temperature sensation?
“It is ultimately at the point of men and women differ in principle: the hormonal balance,” says John Wagner, head of the department of endocrinology. The female sex hormone estrogen widens the blood vessels. While this actually increases the blood circulation and makes his hands and feet warm, but this is also a lot of heat released into the environment.
“From about 15 degrees Celsius throttled the female body so the blood flow in the outer areas of the body in favor of the internal organs,” says Wagner. Basically, the male body is responding well to this system, but in women it is triggered even at low temperatures less.

Another reason for the different thermal balance of men and women has also ultimately have a hormonal origin: the male hormone testosterone to men bestowed a greater muscle mass. For them it makes an average of 40 percent of the body, in women, however, only 25 percent. Muscles produce heat continuously, which is distributed in the body, which gives men a larger heat supply. Finally, men have also a thicker skin than women – that further reduces energy loss through heat dissipation. Women are therefore also in the sense of the word “thin-skinned”
