Type 2 diabetes: Diabetes increases the risk of cancer
May 24th 2010 -
Type 2 diabetics often suffer from cancer than people who do not suffer from the metabolic disease. Particularly significant is the context in pancreatic cancer. Tumors of the prostate (prostate cancer) are in diabetic patients are less frequently than in the general population. To this result, the largest study comes to the cancer risk of type 2 diabetes, which is now published in the journal “The Oncologist”.

To investigate the relationship between diabetes and cancer, Karl Hemminki have from the German Cancer Research Center and colleagues from Sweden and the United States dug through huge amounts of data. They evaluated the medical records of 125.126 diabetic patients who were treated 1964-2007 in a Swedish hospital, and combined these with data from the national Swedish Family Cancer Registry.
It was found that diabetes increased the risk of disease, type 2 for 24 types of cancer. This increase was most associated with pancreatic cancer and liver cancer: diabetes sick 6 times and 4.25 times more often off than the general population. Even for cancer of the kidney, thyroid, esophagus, small intestine and the nervous system, the researchers found a more than twice as high disease risk.
Before the most common male cancer, diabetes seems to protect against. Type 2 diabetics affected significantly lower in prostate cancer. The risk was even the less, had more diabetic blood relatives, the study participants. “About the reasons we can only speculate so far,” says epidemiologist Hemminki. “Maybe a lower mirror is responsible for male sex hormones in diabetics with.”
In the industrialized countries suffer from two to twenty percent of all residents in type 2 diabetes. What support processes in the body of diabetes, the cancer is still unclear.
