Mini-Inflammation: Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not an Illusion
August 15th 2010 -
Abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea: Irritable bowel syndrome makes people living hell. Nevertheless, they are often labeled as psychosomatic, because physical causes were unknown. Human biologists of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have now brought light into darkness: they have discovered mini-inflammation in the intestinal mucosa, which upset the delicate balance in the gut and be accompanied by an awareness of the intestinal nervous system.

The research team led by Prof. Michael Schemann was first demonstrated with ultra fast optical measurement techniques that mediators from mast cells and so-called enterochromaffin cells in the gut activate the nerve cells directly.
“This hypersensitivity of the intestinal nervous system makes the communication between the intestinal mucosa and nervous system-confusion,” said Schemann: the irritated mucous membrane placed more freely neuroactive body substances such as serotonin, histamine and proteases. This body’s own cocktail might therefore be the actual cause of the unpleasant irritable bowel complaints.”
In the medium is capable of identifying the active components, develop, medications for irritable bowel syndrome. Initial tests have shown that irritable bowel symptoms improved after treatment with an antihistamine. Its effect will stabilize the immune system to treat allergic reactions such as Used hay fever.
