Flu Vaccine: Vaccination Protects Against Heart Attacks
September 23rd 2010 -
People can be vaccinated against seasonal flu, benefit may be twofold: They are not armed only against influenza viruses, but rarely have a heart attack than unvaccinated. This shows in a British study, which is published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

In winter, regularly increasing the number of heart attacks. Scientists have therefore already been a link between respiratory disease and heart attack risk assumed.
A research team led by Niroshan Siriwardena from the University of Lincoln has now evaluated data from nearly 79,000 patients from more than 300 English and Welsh practices. Some 12,000 of them between November 2001 and May 2007 had suffered a heart attack. In addition to the immunization for influenza and pneumococcus, the researchers also recorded the overall disease risk of all participants.
The analysis of the data showed that influenza vaccination reduced the risk of heart attack by 19 percent. The protective effect was particularly great for the heart, if the vaccination had taken place before the November each year. A pneumococcal vaccine against pneumonia lowered the risk of heart attack not interestingly.
