At 50 to 60 percent of breast cancer patients, the axillary lymph nodes at diagnosis have not been affected. Metastases in other organs can be almost impossible. Physicians speak in this case a nodal-negative breast cancer, which means a significantly better prognosis for the patient as a nodal-positive breast cancer, in which the nodes are already affected by tumor cells. If you can clarify this distinction in advance, you will save many patients undergoing chemotherapy. A group of scientists has now found a marker that will allow a precise determination.

“Unfortunately, still get about 80 percent of all breast cancer patients with nodal negative breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy, although this would require only about 30 percent of the patients of this group,” says Edgar Dahl, Institute of Pathology at the University Hospital of Aachen. “The problem is that we do not yet know which patients belong to the 30 percent who have a high relapse risk is, therefore, recommended for most women, certainly the chemotherapy.”

This problem of About therapists to be solved in future by the molecular pathological analysis of tumor tissue. Dahl: “The genetic profile of the tumor puts enough information about its aggressiveness and so on recurrence risk of the individual patient. We have to learn to read the information properly to benefit them.”

Dahl and his group has found by examination of approximately 300 breast tumors, several genes, whose activity is lost in the tumor and which, presumably so-called tumor suppressor genes. Whose natural function is is to suppress tumor growth. One with the name ITIH5 could be crucial for predicting the chances of recovery of patients with nodal negative breast tumors. “Have patients with nodal negative breast cancer, where ITIH5 can be detected even in the tissue, according to our analysis a low risk of relapse and therefore a very good prognosis” says Dahl.

Such tumor markers are in the modern treatment of cancer patients and more important, however, the systematic discovery, validation and application in the clinic is still in its infancy. Dahl: “The better scientists understand the signaling pathways in the cancer cell, the individual can be matched in the future the therapy to the individual patient.”

Until that is achieved, however, would still take some time. For approximately 30,000 genes that must interact in various ways, to be investigated.

Remains relevant for the prognosis of breast cancer is early detection of the tumor. Dahl’s team is researching a new method of early detection of breast cancer through blood tests. “This is technically possible because tumors can deliver tiny quantities of DNA in the blood and thus we demonstrate the genetic changes in tumors with high sensitive methods to some extent in the blood.”

The research group has specialized in the detection of changes in the so-called DNA methylation. Methylation is a naturally occurring change in the DNA, which can lead to deactivation of tumor suppressor genes.

Tofu, soy milk and soybeans to reduce the risk of relapse in breast cancer patients. Also, the probability of dying from the malignancy, goes back with increasing consumption. This resulted in an extensive study of the Shanghai Institute of Preventive Medicine and Vanderbilt University.

The international team interviewed more than 5,000 20 – to 75-year-old women who were being treated for breast cancer. The patients were asked to indicate which foods they take in what amounts to her. In addition to soy, the researchers also asked for meat, fish and vegetable consumption. In the next four years, 444 women died from the effects of the disease, 534 more experienced a relapse (recurrence). The more soy foods the participants ate, the better they were protected from late effects. The effect increased up to a limit of 11 g soy protein per day or 40 mg of isoflavones contained therein, after which it remained constant and the protective effect was once again possible. Tofu contains almost 9 grams soy protein per 100 g total weight.

“It is important that we have examined the diet with soy products, and not the intake of soy capsules as dietary supplements,” notes Xiao Ou Shu, director of the study. The capsules often contain only purified isoflavones in soy milk or tofu still last for ANYWHERE other nutrients. Whether isoflavones alone also show the protective effect was therefore not clear as Shu.

Isoflavones compete with estrogen for the estrogen receptors on cancer and other cells – thus there displace the endogenous hormone. In addition, they reduce the production of estrogen and ensure that they are removing the steroid hormones. The combination of these properties could be responsible for the positive effect on breast cancer patients, suggest the study authors. Other components of soy such as folic acid, protein, calcium and dietary fiber may also help.

The protective action unfolded in front of both women after the menopause. And it did not matter whether the breast cancer sensitive to estrogen response or not (estrogen receptor status). A soy-rich diet had no effect on the treatment with tamoxifen, which had been feared because of previous studies with tamoxifen and isoflavones.

The U.S. health authorities have changed the recommendations for mammography screening. Women between 40 and 49 years should not participate in routine tests for breast cancer, said the authority of Preventive Medicine (U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, USPSTF). In this age group was the damage is greater than the benefits of writing, the experts said in a statement.

There were too many false positives for breast cancer and too few women rescued. The decision to cancer early detection under investigation the chest in this age group was taken individually and depends also on the personal risk factors for breast cancer. The USPSTF recommends mammography screening every two years for women between 50 and 74 years.

In women who were older than 75 years, there was no evidence that early detection actually useful. Because here more slow-growing types of breast cancer would be diagnosed with low aggressiveness, which would no longer cause harm to the women in his lifetime. A breast cancer therapy is burdensome and unnecessary in this age group, the authors write.

The USPSTF had evaluated the data from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC). The database contains information on approximately six million mammography examinations and 74,000 breast cancer cases. It incorporates a total of 600,000 records from the years 2000 to 2005.

In Germany, the breast cancer screening has been offered since 2004 for all women between 50 and 69 years. The first results from the year 2009 that were nearly 20 percent of the tumors detected in situ cancers, that is, or early forms of cancer precursors. About 30 percent of invasive breast tumors were smaller than ten millimeters, and in more than two-thirds of breast cancers detected, the lymph nodes were not affected.

However, the participation rate was only 54 percent. Across Europe but demanded a quota of 70 percent. The breast cancer screening for over ten years, three out of 1000 women die of breast cancer without screening there are four. One in four women diagnosed may actually be saved.

The biomechanical structure, including blood vessels was detected by the beneficiary and accepted by the body. “We place after removal of the glandular tissue in cancer surgery, the matrix along with a silicone implant immediately,” says Dr. Darius Dian, Chief Consultant Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Munich.

Encapsulation – as with other implants that are used during breast development – had not existed previously, the results are visually “excellent.” Six of the doctors treated patients with the new method. “The recent successes are promising,” says the doctor. However, the evaluation of the animal skeleton stands out in a larger study yet. In the United States is currently running a proper investigation. An application in individual cases, but was now possible, Dian.

Approximately 57,000 women with breast cancer every year in Germany. With about 15,000 women a mastectomy (amputation) is inevitable. For a breast skin and structure is usually in the abdominal fat tissue, but also removed the back and buttocks or transplanted in a complex process. Produced at the donor site but large scars.

Women who complain of the start of hormone replacement therapy on painful breasts appear to have an increased risk for breast cancer. As scientists of the University of California (Los Angeles) discovered, infected women who took estrogen and progestin regularly, 48 percent more often in an invasive breast cancer if her breasts were the hormones become sensitive to pain. “It is too early to advise women to discontinue hormone therapy,” says study leader Dr. Carolyn J. Crandall, a professor at the School of Medicine. In women whose breasts have become more sensitive by the hormones, but they should at least, the benefits and risks of therapy to be carefully weighed up.

The study is based on data from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), an American long-term study of the leading causes of death and health problems of women in menopause. One of the WHI study started in the 90s, with nearly 17,000 women and examined the effects of hormone replacement therapy with estrogen plus progesterone. She was terminated prematurely in 2002 after it was discovered that the women under the influence of hormones significantly more likely to have developed an invasive breast tumor.

In analyzing the data collected Crandall and her colleagues discovered a risk marker for a later breast cancer: the sensitivity of the breasts. Of the more than 8500 women who regularly swallow the hormone cocktail, got 36 percent of breast tenderness – compared to only 12 percent in the placebo group. And these women were diagnosed in an observation period of almost six years, significantly more often from cancer than those in which the treatment of chest pain sensitivity had not changed.

Why is the breast tissue of women reacted differently to the hormones is unclear. “There must be some differences in breast tissue, which believes make it more or less sensitive to hormones, Mary B. Daly of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. And Crandall suggested: “The sensitivity of the breasts a sign could be that the cells divide very quickly” – which is a risk factor for cancer.

Is the breast cancer early recognition meaningful? Proponents say. Because ever in former times the tumor is recognized, the more besster. A new study sets behind it question marks. Because too many illnesses are diagnosed, which place themselves as harmlessly out.

One of three cancer of the breast illnesses, which are discovered with
Mammograms, turns out in the consequence as harmless. After the evaluation of data from five countries scientists of the Nordic Cochrane Centre believe that women are treated again and again, although their cancer conditions very probably do not spread or will be deadly.

That too many women with cancer of the breast are diagnosed, is a problem of the early recognition. Because no possibility exists at present of differentiating between dangerous and harmless forms – all are treated.

Proponents of the routine investigations argue that the Mammograms is crucial for the early discovery of cancer cells. The Danish researchers for their part give to think that preventive medical examinations can lead against cancer to a over diagnosis.

The team stress that the discovery has only unfavorable effects of harmless cancer conditions, which would otherwise lifelong clinically not have been diagnosed for the concerning. The researchers analyzed a whole row of statistics from Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Sweden and Norway, which had introduced programs to the precaution.

Whether the Mammography Screening harms now more as if uses, is already longer disputed. Sarah Cant of Breakthrough Breast CAN cerium stressed, it hopes that the research results did not prevent the women to be able to be examined further. It assumes the advantages also a wrong diagnosis would be larger than the possible disadvantages.

Julietta Patnick, the chief British CAN cerium of the Screening of program said that the Mammography of one saves the life of eight women with cancer of the breast, because its tumors without the Screening would only have been discovered in a advanced stage.

Turning point in the cancer of the breast research: For the first time Canadian researchers succeeded in decoding the gene code of this kind of cancer.

How the cancer of the breast research centre communicated British Colombia to the Canadian province in Vancouver, open this discovery a considerable number at possibilities and could help of treating the illness medically more purposefully. Cancer of the breast is the most frequent cancer form with women. The discovery equals the find one “secret book concerning cancer of the breast”, explained the researchers around director of studies Samuel Aparicio.

For their study the scientists observed the development of the breast carcinoma of a woman over nine years. It decoded possible combination of DNA on the genome in three different development stages thereby billions and found at the end 32 mutations in the Metastases. Since only five of them were present in the original tumor, the researchers could identify these as “causes of the illness”. The investigation published the trade paper “Nature” as cover story.

So far nothing has pointed out that the five mutations for cancer could play a role, explained the researchers the surprise of the result. It gives new information about to the science how cancer of the breast develops and spreads. The mutations showed also that the cells in a tumor were not alike and each kind of cell can react differently to a treatment.

The break-through became possible only by new and more favorable technology of the decoding of gene information. For the successful listing of the human genome in the year 2001 still years work and immense funds were necessary, explained Co-author of the study Marco Marra. “We were able, which cancer of the breast said in weeks to decode and with a fraction of the costs”, the scientist and it prophesied that this will be in not too long time only a question of days. Then physicians for individual cancer patients could develop custom-made treatments.

An acceptance reads that the breast fabric is shifted after an abortion into a condition of increased susceptibility for a cancer condition. The results of different studies about cancer of the breast and abortion are not clear necessarily, determine for example Gunnar Erlandsson, differently Ekbom, Scott M. Montgomery and Sven Cnattingius. They attribute to methodical problems.

The scientists examined Swedish women, who were seized in the Swedish medical birth register between 1973 and 1991 and existed with those a connection to the Swedish cancer register. During the evaluation of the data it turned out that women with abortion or with abortion did not carry a increased cancer of the breast risk. The scientists assume that the protecting effect of a pregnancy enters, independently of whether the baby is born or not.

With the E3N-Study, whose results are published in August in the technical literature (international journal OF CAN cerium), the data were evaluated by 100.000 women at the age by 40 – 65 years. No connection between abortion and/or abortion and cancer of the breast risk could be found. The scientists of INSERM, who accomplished this study, found however references on the fact that the status of the Menopause could play a role. These references do not evaluate it however as significantly. Due to these references they give however expression to their assumptions that there is no connection between abortion and cancer of the breast that however a connection between abortion and cancer of the breast risk could give. This could depend on whether the woman is before or after the Menopause. Whereby the risk could be easily increased with postmenopausal women.

A study at the department OF Preventive Medicine and Norris Comprehensive CAN cerium center, saucily School OF Medicine, University OF Southern California, Los Angeles, asked female patients with cancer of the breast and abortions and/or abortions. The result of the study: “Our results do not support the thesis that the cancer of the breast risk of young women increases abortions.”

“There are at present no sound proofs for cancer of the breast a causing effect of Deodorants. There is thus also no justification to release in the public concern.” An expert committee of the working group says Gynecology Oncology (AGO) in the German cancer company (DKG), which provided a current risk evaluation for Antiperspirants on behalf the umbrella organization during the cancer of the breast emergence.

To the memory: In the year 2004 a study had proven arrears of the preservative Paraben, which is used in Deodorants, body sprays, cosmetics, and drugs for the extension of the durability, in cancer tumors. The scientists judged from it a connection between Paraben containing Deodorants and cancer of the breast. Thereupon experts had guessed among other things also the German cancer company to do without Paraben containing Deodorants for the time being.

„Using by Antiperspirants and/or Deodorants, which aluminum salts, antimicrobial substances and preservatives contain, increases the breast cancer risk? To “this question Professor Dr. Anton Scharl (Amberg) followed, to Professor Dr. Uwe-Jochen Göhring (Bonn) and Dr. Florian contactor (Heidelberg). They come to the result: „Particularly under the aspect that those are clearly better occupied risk increasing effect of other factors of the lifestyle such as reproduction and nourishing behavior, the focus should aim at it that these realizations lead to a positive change of behavior, instead of through bad or not at all occupied theses for the cancer of the breast emergence of fears to be released. “

The fact that the cancer of the breast experts women rather guess/advise to a healthy lifestyle surprises. Naturally the avoidance of predominance and fat-rich nutrition, more vegetable food and above all movement can healing to decrease the risk at cancer of the breast to get sick. Anyhow these experts see therein many larger chances, than the danger, which the used chemicals could ever cause.

The scientists nevertheless call to further studies, in order to be able to exclude the risk, as they formulate that. „The insufficient data situation is however reason of enough to examine the hypothesis further and carefully planned toxicological to accomplish pharmacological and epidemiological studies “, reads the recommendation of the experts. But with the formulation the result is practically already marked. Whether still result-open research is?

In the message also to Bundesinstitut for Risk evaluation (BfR) it is referred that 2004 had judged: „There is no scientific proof at present that the use of such Deodorants increases the risk of a cancer of the breast illness. However due to the fact that Parabens could be contained in tumor fabrics by cancer of the breast patients, it can be manufactured according to opinion of the institute still no causal connection between these materials and the emergence of cancer of the breast. When investigations at the animal (in vivo) for the hormonal effect of Parabens there were besides no clear results. Referring to a weak estrogenic effect pointed themselves only with Butylparaben to administration of very high doses. In view of the re-valuation by scientific committees of the European Union, which can be expected, the BfR considers no measures at present necessary. “

But completely united are not itself the experts. In a statement (statement on a possible cancer endangerment by Parabens, 1W. Parzefall, C. printer, N. Erlach, A. Losert, 2M. Mick 1Department toxicology, 2Abt. Applied one and experimental Oncology, Institute for cancer research,
) The scientists the following determine medical University of Vienna, provided for the Austrian cancer assistance: “The actual risk cannot be measured due to the unsatisfactory data situation at present. As a precaution we demand the risk to therefore minimize to use and Parabens as no longer as possible for shoulder sprays or for other cosmetics, which are used at the torso.”

While from the unsatisfactory data situation thus it concludes some expert that everything is not so dangerous, comes the others at the conclusion, dear caution reign to let. Fact is that there are hormone-effective chemical materials, which are used in food, pharmaceuticals and Cosmetic products. Which effects have these materials in the long run on the body, so far not yet sufficiently one examined. And gives to think. Because since 2004 doubts are not only expressed over the connection by Parabens and the emergence by cancer of the breast. But even years later are allegedly present no sufficient data and results. The fact that the science did not clarify that yet makes very puzzled. Does someone have to hide something there?

The team around Naomi everything of the University OF Oxford estimates that approximately eleven per cent of the diagnosed cases of cancer of the breast are to be led back on the consumption of alcohol of the women. The study concentrated on women, who consumed small up to middle quantities alcohol. This quantity was defined with at the most three alcoholic beverages daily or less. During the seven years a quarter of the participating 1.3 million women indicated current study to drink no alcohol.

Of the women, took nearly all little than 21 drinks drank the alcohol in the week to itself. It was average a quantity of ten gram alcohol per day. That is somewhat more than in a small beer, 125 milliliters wine or a spirit is contained.

Got sick to nearly 13 per cent of the Mrs. middle age with chest, liver, rectum, mouth or throat cancer. With regular consumption of alcohol a sample developed. An alcoholic beverage increased the risk with women until 75 years with all kinds of cancer around six per cent. The percentages for the individual forms were different. An alcoholic beverage on the day increased the cancer of the breast risk around twelve per cent, with mast intestine cancer was it ten per cent, with esophagus cancer 22 per cent, with mouth cancer 29 per cent and with throat cancer 44 per cent. On the population put down that means 15 additional illnesses per 1.000 woman.

Note: Also different studies already showed that regular consumption of alcohol can increase the breast cancer risk. However to certain ingredients in beer and wine – the so-called Phenol-cancer-restraining and anti-oxidative effects one repeats.
